May 9 - Week 5 Snapshot

Another week, a healthier, livelier bear roaming the woods.

Let’s get right to it — a snapshot-look at the Week #5 MOTY rankings, highlighting players rising or
falling in the YTD, Last Week and, for the first time in 2006, the Month-to-Date weekly rankings. We’ll
focus on guys that might be available in your league or possible trade targets/bait. Remember, “MTD”
and “Last Week” MOTY#s are “deltas” +/- over YTD MOTY#s.

American League:

Johan Santana sp (MIN) – YTD MOTY#: 21.07   MTD: + 18.91   LW: + 12.83
Week 5: 2 win, 20 K, 0.79 whip, 1.93 era, 20.00 K/bb (1 bb), in 14.0 ip
YTD: 3 win, 48 K, 1.19 whip, 3.69 era, 4.36 K/bb, in 7 gs (46.33 ip)
Okay, so he’s not available in your league. But … a 20.00 K/bb in one week?! Are you kidding?! The
earth’s axis is righting itself after that April lurch it took.

John Koronka sp (TEX) – YTD MOTY#: 27.37   MTD: + 21.61   LW: + 5.33
Week 5: 0 win, 4 K, 0.72 whip, 1.08 era, 4.00 K/bb, in 8.33 ip
YTD: 3 win, 24 K, 1.16 whip, 3.55 era, 2.40 K/bb, in 6 gs (38.0 ip)
Be honest, you have more-heralded guys on your roster with worse YTD lines so far, don’t you? Not to
worry, we all do … but not for long.

Joel Pineiro sp (SEA) – YTD MOTY#: 22.51   MTD: + 13.62   LW: + 10.67
Week 5: 2 win, 6 K, 0.76 whip, 1.59 era, 6.00 K/bb, in 2 gs (17.0 ip)
YTD: 4 win, 23 K, 1.22 whip, 3.72 era, 2.09 K/bb, in 7 gs (46.0 ip)
Had a great Week 5. Probably not available, but maybe you can deal for him.

Jeff Weaver sp (LAA) – YTD MOTY#: 1.53   MTD: - 2.86   LW: - 2.69
Week 5: 0 win, 4 K, 0.95 whip, 2.45 era, 2.00 K/bb, in 1 gs (7.33 ip)
YTD: 1 win, 24 K, 1.46 whip, 6.43 era, 2.67 K/bb, in 6 gs (35.0 ip)
His Week 5 ratios seem like he’s turning things around, just not getting any run support — then 5
runs in 6.33 ip Monday night … let him sort it out on the wire.

Felix Hernandez sp (SEA) – YTD MOTY#: 1.53   MTD: - 26.57   LW: - 3.98
Week 5: 0 win, 7 K, 1.80 whip, 7.20 era, 3.50 K/bb, in 1 gs (5.0 ip)
YTD: 1 win, 35 K, 1.64 whip, 5.40 era, 2.50 K/bb, in 6 gs (31.667 ip)
On average, he was the #52 pick in ESPN mixed leagues. Even with his K potential, that was too high,
given all the … “un-givens” of youth. Spring training shin splints were supposedly the early problem.
But despite his 35 K, his 1.64 whip and 5.40 era suggest he’s not fooling anyone at the plate. Doc
Gooden is resting easy for now, his “Phenom” crown safely stashed on the mantle. If you believe in
him that much, try to “take him off” a frustrated owner’s hands.

Kevin Gregg mr (LAA) – YTD MOTY#: 58.04   MTD: + 58.04   LW: + 14.03
Week 5: 1 win, 3 K, 0.43 whip, 1.29 era, 3.00 K/bb, in 1 gs (7.0 ip)
YTD: 2 win, 14 K, 0.85 whip, 1.02 era, 4.67 K/bb, in 17.667 ip (1 gs)
Very sharp in spot start, a role he’s been called on to fill in the past. Great YTD ratios.

Joel Zumaya mr (DET) – YTD MOTY#: 22.52   MTD: + 4.30   LW: + 7.88
Week 5: 1 win, 4 K, 0.00 whip, 0.00 era, 4.00 K/bb (0 bb), in 4.0 ip
YTD: 1 win, 16 K, 0.92 whip, 2.77 era, 5.33 K/bb, in 11 gp (13.0 ip)
Two things to note: 1) his LW is higher than his MTD – he’s picking up after a down trend. 2) That’s a
damn nice YTD 5.33 K/bb.

Fernando Rodney ciw (DET) – YTD MOTY#: 41.77   MTD: + 33.22   LW: + 10.89
Week 5: 0 win, 1 sv, 4 K, 0.00 whip, 0.00 era, 4.00 K/bb (0 bb), in 3.0 ip
YTD: 1 win, 5 sv, 12 K, 0.62 whip, 0.00 era, 3.00 K/bb, in 13.0 ip
Zero earned runs in 13 ip. Exceptional. Of course, eventually he’ll give up some runs just like …

Todd Jones cl (DET) – YTD MOTY#: 5.51   MTD: + 5.51   LW: - 6.65
Week 5: 0 win, 3 sv, 1 K, 2.70 whip, 10.80 era, 1.00 K/bb, in 3.33 ip
YTD: 0 win, 6 sv, 2 K, 1.64 whip, 6.14 era, 1.00 K/bb, in 7.33 ip
A tale of two Tigers. A bad week for Jones, getting roughed up in 2 games. Patience would be
prudent, and a lot easier if you own Rodney.

Mike Napoli c (LAA) – YTD MOTY#: 1.06   MTD: + 1.06   LW: + 1.06
Week 5: 1 runs, 1 hr, 2 rbi, 0 sb, .273 avg., .970 ops (.333 obp/.636 slg), .500 bb/K.
The Angels sent Mathis down to AAA to hone his craft and brought Napoli up. Maybe it’s just a cup up
of coffee, maybe it’s not. Someone’s got to back up J. Molina.

Jose Molina c (LAA) – YTD MOTY#: 0.35   MTD: + 0.35   LW: - 0.12
Week 5: 0 runs, 0 hr, 0 rbi, 0 sb, .000 avg., .000 ops, .00 bb/K, 3 gp and 8 ab
Maybe Napoli’s up for something more like a bottomless mug of high-test and a box of Krispy
Kremes.

Kevin Youkilis 1b (BOS) – YTD MOTY#: 12.39   MTD: + 10.96   LW: + 5.77
Week 5: 8 runs, 2 hr, 4 rbi, 0 sb, .440 avg., 1.253 ops (.533 obp/.720 slg), .800 bb/K.
Outside chance he’s still available in mixed-leagues.

Eduarado Perez 1b (CLE) – YTD MOTY#: 8.48   MTD: + 1.06   LW: + 1.30
Week 5: 1 runs, 1 hr, 10 rbi, 0 sb, .300 avg., .900 ops (.300 obp/.600 slg)
YTD: 7 runs, 4 hr, 15 rbi, 0 sb, .311 avg., 1.049 ops (.360 obp/.689 slg), .750 bb/K
He splits time with Broussard, but in deep AL-only leagues, he could help you out.

Chris Shelton 1b (DET) – YTD MOTY#: 14.87   MTD: - 10.51   LW: - 3.32
Week 5: 1 runs, 0 hr, 1 rbi, 0 sb, .174 avg., .374 ops (.200 obp/.174 slg), .143 bb/K
Every year someone comes out guns blazing, then crashes back through the stratosphere. Shelton
will still produce, but no one not named “Pujols” stays that hot for very long.

Mark DeRosa 1b (TEX) – YTD MOTY#: 7.14   MTD: + 7.14   LW: + 6.91
Week 5: 8 runs, 2 hr, 5 rbi, 0 sb, .407 avg., 1.226 ops (.448 obp/.778 slg), .500 bb/K
Did anyone really think D’Angelo was D’Answer when Kinsler went on the DL?

Mark Loretta 2b (BOS) – YTD MOTY#: 4.65   MTD: + 2.96   LW: + 1.87
Week 5: 7 runs, 0 hr, 1 rbi, 0 sb, .346 avg., .854 ops (.393 obp/.462 slg), 2.00 bb/K
Patience, Grasshopper, patience.

Joe Crede 3b (CWS) – YTD MOTY#: 14.01   MTD: + 13.16   LW: + 4.04
Week 5: 2 runs, 2 hr, 7 rbi, 0 sb, .357 avg., 1.026 ops (.419 obp/.607 slg), 3.00 bb/K
Look for him on the wire. He’s there in a lot of leagues

Brandon Inge 3b (DET) – YTD MOTY#: 8.20   MTD: + 5.67   LW: + 3.80
Week 5: 7 runs, 3 hr, 5 rbi, 0 sb, .300 avg., 1.114 ops (.364 obp/.750 slg), .333 bb/K

Bobby Crosby ss (OAK) – YTD MOTY#: 3.96   MTD: + 3.83   LW: + 1.95
Week 5: 3 runs, 2 hr, 8 rbi, 0 sb, .233 avg., .692 ops (.226 obp/.467 slg), .000 bb/K
Gotta like 2 hr and 8 rbi. But ugly avg, obp and bb/K. Watchlist him, when his ratios pick up you should
pick him up. He’s in a lot of FA pools after people lost patience.

Torii Hunter of (MIN) – YTD MOTY#: 8.40   MTD: + 6.86   LW: + 4.54
Week 5: 4 runs, 2 hr, 7 rbi, 0 sb, .440 avg., 1.300 ops (.500 obp/.800 slg), .750 bb/K
What a difference a week makes.

Brad Wilkerson of (TEX) – YTD MOTY#: 7.96   MTD: + 6.92   LW: + 4.04
Week 5: 9 runs, 1 hr, 2 rbi, 0 sb, .455 avg., 1.283 ops (.556 obp/.727 slg), .500 bb/K
Come on, Texas didn’t “dump” Soriano — Wilkerson just started off slow.

Michael Cuddyer of (MIN) – YTD MOTY#: 6.30   MTD: + 6.30   LW: + 2.88
Week 5: 1 runs, 0 hr, 4 rbi, 1 sb, .421 avg., 1.134 ops (.450 obp/.684 slg), .333 bb/K

Darin Erstad of (LAA) – YTD MOTY#: 1.80   MTD: + 1.52   LW: + 0.00
YTD: 8 runs, 0 hr, 4 rbi, 1 sb, .237 avg., .629 ops (.279 obp/.350 slg), .214 bb/K
Missed all of last week with bone spurs in the ankle. The Angels are scuffling all around.

National League:

Claudio Vargas sp (ARI) – YTD MOTY#: 29.04   MTD: - 58.88   LW: + 7.54
Week 5: 2 win, 8 K, 1.25 whip, 1.50 era, 2.00 K/bb, in 2 gs (12.0 ip)
YTD: 4 win, 23 K, 1.39 whip, 3.77 era, 2.30 K/bb, in 6 gs (31.0 ip)
Two tough outings in April. Since then he’s reeled off 3 wins. You can really see the up-and-down
effect in his 3 MOTY#s — green, red, green.

Jeff Francis sp (COL) – YTD MOTY#: 12.00   MTD: + 11.28   LW: + 7.49
Week 5: 1 win, 5 K, 0.71 whip, 0.00 era, 5.00 K/bb, in 1 gs (7.0 ip)
YTD: 1 win, 31 K, 1.31 whip, 3.60 era, 1.63 K/bb, in 6 gs (35.0 ip)
Interestingly, the homer dome isn’t in Colorado anymore … at least after 17 home games. Coors
ranks #21 in hr allowed (Rox+opps) through May 7th, with just 29 hr in 17 games (avg home games
per team thus far = 16). Like players, ballparks can earn MOTY#s — Coors batting MOTY# = 70.72
through Week 5 … 10th in MLB, just below Minnesota. Sure, ballparks have an affect, but not as much
as good pitching — the Rockies home pitching MOTY# ranks … #16 in MLB – dead middle of the
pack – not the basement as you’ve been Pavlovian-trained to expect.

Woody Williams sp (SD) – YTD MOTY#: 23.30   MTD: + 19.16   LW: + 6.16
Week 5: 2 win, 8 K, 1.10 whip, 3.29 era, 4.00 K/bb, in 2 gs (13.667 ip)
YTD: 3 win, 26 K, 1.17 whip, 3.12 era, 2.17 K/bb, in 6 gs (40.33 ip)
Nice surprise. Nab him if you need a spot start or … ten.

Oliver Perez sp (PIT) – YTD MOTY#: - 7.90   MTD: - 11.69   LW: - 4.12
Week 5: 0 win, 1 K, 1.75 whip, 9.00 era, 0.25 K/bb, in 1 gs (4.0 ip)
YTD: 1 win, 26 K, 2.11 whip, 7.71 era, 0.96 K/bb, in 7 gs (32.667 ip)
Speed doesn’t kill, walks do.

Livan Hernandez sp (WAS) – YTD MOTY#: - 0.09   MTD: - 9.23   LW: - 5.29
Week 5: 0 win, 3 K, 2.00 whip, 12.60 era, 0.75 K/bb, in 1 gs (5.0 ip)
YTD: 1 win, 28 K, 1.56 whip, 6.29 era, 2.15 K/bb, in 7 gs (44.33 ip)
Maybe the all the innings are catching up.

Dontrelle Willis sp (FLA) – YTD MOTY#: 4.55   MTD: - 14.04   LW: - 10.59
Week 5: 0 win, 9 K, 1.83 whip, 10.50 era, 4.50 K/bb, in 2 gs (12.0 ip)
YTD: 1 win, 30 K, 1.40 whip, 5.15 era, 2.14 K/bb (14 bb), in 7 gs (43.667 ip)
You can’t question this guy’s heart, but the Marlins anemic offense doesn’t contribute to a YTD 1.40
whip and 5.15 era. Diminished defense, yes. Still D-Train’s YTD era is almost double his 2.63 era
from 2005. He may be pressing, trying to carry too much weight in Florida. If so, hopefully he relaxes
and let’s the game come to him.

Ramon Ramirez mr (COL) – YTD MOTY#: 60.12   MTD: + 60.12   LW: - 22.57
Week 5: 1 win, 3 K, 1.29 whip, 0.00 era, 3.00 K/bb, in 2.33 ip (2 gp)
YTD: 2 win, 16 K, 0.58 whip, 0.00 era, 8.00 K/bb, in 12.0 ip (9 gp)
Yes, he suffered a negative Week 5 MOTY#, but his previous value was greatly inflated by a small stat
sample … and great YTD stats: 0.58 whip, 0.00 era and 8.00 bb/K. Those numbers will correct with a
run here or there. But still, nice bonus wins.

Todd Coffey mr (CIN) – YTD MOTY#: 38.65   MTD: + 33.07   LW: + 10.85
Week 5: 1 win, 3 K, 0.90 whip, 0.00 era, 3.00 K/bb, in 3.33 ip (2 gp)
YTD: 2 win, 14 K, 1.20 whip, 0.49 era, 2.33 K/bb, in 18.33 ip (15 gp)
18.33 ip — he’s a go to guy who’s getting the job done. If Weathers falters, he could be in line for
saves. And potential vulture wins is nice, too.

Jason Isringhausen cl (STL) – YTD MOTY#: 8.21   MTD: + 8.02   LW: + 2.49
Week 5: 0 win, 1 sv, 1 K, 2.25 whip, 0.00 era, 1.00 K/bb, in 1.33 ip (1 gp), 100% sv pct.
YTD: 1 win, 8 sv, 6 K, 2.03 whip, 5.23 era, 0.55 K/bb (11 bb), 80% sv pct., in 10.33 ip
He’s got more saves than K’s. And more bb’s than saves. Doh.

Mike Gonzalez cl (PIT) – YTD MOTY#: 12.78   MTD: + 8.32   LW: - 0.60
Week 5: 1 win, 0 sv, 3 K, 1.67 whip, 3.00 era, 1.50 K/bb, in 3.0 ip (2 gp), 0% sv pct.
YTD: 1 win, 3 sv, 11 K, 1.50 whip, 2.38 era, 1.57 K/bb (7 bb), 100% sv pct., in 11.33 ip
Whip and K/bb are troubling. Note the declining MOTY# trend.

Roberto Hernandez ciw (PIT) – YTD MOTY#: 8.17   MTD: + 0.81   LW: + 1.79
Week 5: 0 win, 0 sv, 1 K, 0.50 whip, 0.00 era, 1.00 K/bb, in 2.0 ip (2 gp), 0% sv pct.
YTD: 0 win, 2 sv, 8 K, 1.57 whip, 2.70 era, 1.00 K/bb, 100% sv pct., in 13.33 ip
If not Gonzalez, who?

Damaso Marte ciw (PIT) – YTD MOTY#: 12.99   MTD: + 12.08   LW: + 3.11
Week 5: 0 win, 0 sv, 1 K, 0.67 whip, 0.00 era, 1.00 K/bb (0 bb), in 1.2 ip (3 gp), 0% sv pct.
YTD: 0 win, 0 sv, 12 K, 1.22 whip, 2.00 era, 6.00 K/bb, 0% sv pct., in 9.00 ip (15 gp)
Interesting. Obviously, his ip/gp shows he’s a situational pitcher. But isn’t that what a closer is?
Hmmm.

Rob Bowen c (SD) – YTD MOTY#: 7.93   MTD: + 7.93   LW: + 6.50
YTD: 8 runs, 1 hr, 6 rbi, 0 sb, .429 avg., 1.233 ops (.519 obp/.714 slg), 1.00 bb/K
Mirabelli’s back in Boston. Bowen’s compatriots include Josh Bard and …

Mike Piazza c (SD) – YTD MOTY#: 1.89   MTD: + 1.30   LW: + 0.00
Week 5: 0 runs, 0 hr, 0 rbi, 0 sb, .231 avg., .641 ops (.333 obp/.308 slg), 13 ab/4 gp
YTD: 4 runs, 3 hr, 6 rbi, 0 sb, .213 avg., 0.681 ops (.294 obp/.387 slg), .643 bb/K
And he can’t throw out base runners.

Olmedo Saenz 1b (LAD) – YTD MOTY#: 10.32   MTD: + 9.57   LW: + 4.97
YTD: 10 runs, 4 hr, 17 rbi, 0 sb, .327 avg., 1.019 ops (.345 obp/.673 slg), .083 bb/K
On the Dodger broadcasts, Vin keeps asking why people throw him fastballs. Good question — he
can hit … when he gets ab’s. Based on Week 5, why wouldn’t he?

Mike Jacobs 1b (FLA) – YTD MOTY#: 2.93   MTD: + 0.71   LW: - 0.47
MTD: 6 runs, 1 hr, 7 rbi, 2 sb, .154 avg., .563 ops (.317 obp/.246 slg), .652 bb/K
This is not the Mike Jacobs anyone was expecting. Including Mike Jacobs.

Adrian Gonzalez 1b (SD) – YTD MOTY#: 3.52   MTD: + 0.33   LW: - 0.83
YTD: 12 runs, 1 hr, 13 rbi, 0 sb, .223 avg., .607 ops (.287 obp/.320 slg), .435 bb/K
Ouch.

Dan Uggla 2b (FLA) – YTD MOTY#: 8.49   MTD: + 8.28   LW: + 4.06
Week 5: 9 runs, 1 hr, 4 rbi, 1 sb, .344 avg., .926 ops (.364 obp/.562 slg), .333 bb/K
He’s Uggla, those numbers aren’t … sorry, had to, just too easy.

Marcus Giles 2b (ATL) – YTD MOTY#: 3.13   MTD: + 1.21   LW: + 0.95
Week 5: 4 runs, 0 hr, 4 rbi, 2 sb, .250 avg., .583 ops (.250 obp/.333 slg), 0.00 bb/K
No great shakes, but there are signs of life. If you can swing it, he might be a decent trade target –
“take him off someone’s hands,” someone who’s banging his head right now.

Aramis Ramirez 3b (CHC) – YTD MOTY#: 5.82   MTD: + 4.95   LW: + 2.02
Week 5: 4 runs, 2 hr, 2 rbi, 0 sb, .276 avg., .852 ops (.300 obp/.552 slg), .500 bb/K
Finally, some power.

Pedro Feliz 3b (SF) – YTD MOTY#: 4.73   MTD: + 3.89   LW: + 1.97
Week 5: 3 runs, 2 hr, 3 rbi, 0 sb, .321 avg., .893 ops (.321 obp/.571 slg)

Hanley Ramirez ss (FLA) – YTD MOTY#: 12.68   MTD: + 8.91   LW: + 3.44
Week 5: 8 runs, 0 hr, 5 rbi, 0 sb, .308 avg., .862 ops (.400 obp/.462 slg)
Took a little dip the last few weeks, but had a nice Week 5 — he’s the #1 ranked NL ss in the current
MOTY rankings.

Khalil Greene ss (SD) – YTD MOTY#: 7.02   MTD: + 5.47   LW: + 3.04
Week 5: 3 runs, 1 hr, 7 rbi, 2 sb, .308 avg., .900 ops (.400 obp/.500 slg), .667 bb/K
That’s 5-category production. Ratios catching up with power. Go get him.

Jeff Francouer of (ATL) – YTD MOTY#: 5.91   MTD: + 5.88   LW: + 2.66
Week 5: 5 runs, 2 hr, 8 rbi, 0 sb, .273 avg., .818 ops (.273 obp/.545 slg), 0.00 bb/K
Dude, nice Week 5, but take a walk once in a while. Please.

Dave Roberts of (SD) – YTD MOTY#: 5.11   MTD: + 4.38   LW: + 2.63
Week 5: 6 runs, 0 hr, 3 rbi, 2 sb, .333 avg., .938 ops (.419 obp/.519 slg), .667 bb/K
Can’t steal bases if you don’t get on base — look at that Week 5 obp.

Shawn Green of (ARI) – YTD MOTY#: 8.55   MTD: + 8.52   LW: + 5.41
Week 5: 6 runs, 2 hr, 5 rbi, 2 sb, .462 avg., 1.341 ops (.533 obp/.808 slg)
Mentioned he was heating up last week. Hope it’s not too late to get him.

Cliff Floyd of (NYM) – YTD MOTY#: 3.29   MTD: + 2.81   LW: + 0.71
YTD: 11 runs, 3 hr, 14 rbi, 2 sb, .186 avg., .590 ops (.286 obp/.304 slg)
At some point, gotta cut bait. But just feels like if you do it now, it might come back to haunt you.
Hopefully you have a bench spot.

Brady Clark of (MIL) – YTD MOTY#: 2.14   MTD: + 1.97   LW: + 0.21
YTD: 9 runs, 1 hr, 8 rbi, 0 sb, .216 avg., .614 ops (.325 obp/.289 slg), 1.667 bb/K
Shark chum.
